My dream is to realize who I truly am, 2007 © Tealia Ellis Ritter

Tealia Ellis Ritter was born in Illinois in 1978. She studied at Columbia College of Chicago. These images are from a body of work called, "The Live Creature and Ethereal Things." These images depict people from Ritter's daily life and strangers she meets. I find these images captivating not only because of the titling but also because of the captivating stare that each person has. In Ritter's work she states that although the subject matter has completely control of the space and what they where she creates the images to look like European society portraits.

As I travel to and from different areas of Europe I meet new people and visit some old friends. The fist two image is of friends I have met in my time here. It has been great so far to meet all these people from all over. I also had an amazing opportunity to see an old friend from Milwaukee while she studies in Paris, France.

Ryan McGinley is an American photographer who spent time traveling across the country with his friends. His images capture the purest form of freedom; his subjects lack clothes and all inhibition while they frolic in the natural landscapes. McGinley portrays the freedom of youth and the connection of the human body to the natural landscape through his photographs. More recently McGinley has been photographing nudes in the studio, which brings up the question: when is a naked body a nude and when is it "naked." His photographs ride the fence; his subjects express an emotional depth and are sometimes extremely vulnerable in front of the camera. I am so drawn to his portraits and his landscape/human interaction pieces because of their sensitivity of the human body and it's relation to the environment.

Iain McKell was born in Dorset, England. He studied graphics design and then moved to London in 1980. McKell has been successfully working in fashion, advertising, and social documentary. He photographed Madonna for her first magazine cover one week before she hit number one on the british charts. His images are beautiful and informative. His work "The New Gypsies," was started in 2001 and continued until 2010. His shows a breathtaking underground society that almost makes you want to join them. He brings to light the conditions that these people live and raise there children in, in such a manner that makes you almost want to join them. The raw portraits to the breathtaking landscapes are what really drew me to his work.

Mike Brodie is an american born in 1985 not much older than myself. He never formally studied photography and in 2004 took off on a great adventure creating his one and only series, "The Polaroid Kidds." For four years he documented his travels through the rail system capturing without any pressures. His work is honest and forthcoming. He does not try to glamourize the lives of those he comes upon. He captures them as they are. Brodie no longer photographs and has decided to become a mechanic.

You can see his whole series "The Polaroid Kidds" on his website: http://www.mikebrodiephotography.com/

Milwaukee Characters

Emily, Milwaukee, Wisconsin © Andrea Bartley

Nicholas, Milwaukee, Wisconsin © Andrea Bartley

Charles, Milwaukee, Wisconsin © Andrea Bartley

Surprisingly, most of the people I encounter have grown up in Milwaukee or lived here for a significant amount of time. But what should the cut-off be? How long do you have to spend in one area to be considered "from" there? What place do you identify yourself from? Emily has lived in Milwaukee for 15 years, while Nicholas has only been here for 7 years. Do they both call Milwaukee their home? When I photographed people this time, I found that it was easier to get a sincere reaction from them if I strike up a conversation for a short amount of time. It was easier for them to trust me if I explain my purpose for taking their picture and when I asked them about themselves, they relaxed a little more in front of the camera.

Also, I think I want to start shooting verticals as well as horizontals, just in case there is something about their attire or gesture that is interesting.

From Series True Men: John-Mark 20, Upper East Side, NYC © Brian Shumway

I recently stumbled upon Brian Shumway's work. He is a Brooklyn-based photographer who shoots portraits for editorials and works on personal projects. His portraiture is stunning. He works in black and white and also color, often drawing out beautifully saturated colors and wonderfully soft light. So luscious! His personal work questions the norms of society: blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity, photographing children with psychological disorders, and questioning the validity of high fashion photography with gritty pseudo-fashion shots.

On the Street: Milwaukee

My first day out on the town to photograph some strangers. I had some hits and misses, but I got a few good ones. These gentlemen were so kind to allow me to photograph them. Kaitlynn and I have both noticed that men seem to be more comfortable in front of the camera. Perhaps the fact that we are two attractive young ladies helps our photographic cause.
